Dr. Brian Williams’ STatement on Third Anniversary of January 6th Attack on US Capitol
DALLAS, TX - Today, Dr. Brian Williams released a statement in response to the third anniversary of the January 6th, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol.
“Three years ago, we watched in horror as an armed mob stormed the US Capitol and tried to stop the peaceful transition of power,” said Williams. “Since then, it’s only become more clear that our democracy is under attack. We’ve learned that the violence on January 6th was not spontaneous – but the result of a coordinated effort by former President Trump and his extremist allies to discredit the 2020 election results.
“Polling from Navigator Research shows that more than 80% of Americans are concerned about political violence, and two out of three Americans believe the events of January 6th could happen again. With Republicans in Congress continuing to defend the violence we witnessed, voting against measures to hold those involved accountable, and refusing to do anything to keep weapons of war out of the hands of extremists – I understand that fear.
“I’m running for Congress because of this threat to our democracy and our most important freedoms. As a veteran, I know what it means to put service before self and country before party. We need leaders who will always defend our Constitution, even when it comes at a political cost; we need leaders who believe that violence is never the answer and will hold even their own supporters responsible for it.
“In Congress, I’ll work to strengthen our democracy by supporting the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and other measures that make it easier for Americans to vote. I will always hold those who threaten our Constitution responsible for their actions. And I will fight back against disinformation and political intimidation with every chance I get.
With bold leaders in Congress, we can prevent violence like we saw on January 6th, empower voters, and preserve our democracy for generations to come. ”
