Dr. Brian Williams’ Statement on the Mass Shooting in Lewiston, Maine
DALLAS, TX - Today, Dr. Brian Williams released the following statement in response to the mass shooting last night in Lewiston, Maine:
“At least 16 dead and dozens more injured. Another community terrorized and a nation traumatized. When is enough enough?
The tragedy in Maine was the 565th mass shooting this year. Our lawmakers should have prevented this – but Maine does not require background checks on all gun sales; it does not require a waiting period to purchase a weapon; it does not ban assault weapons; and it does not have a red flag law. Any one of these measures might have prevented this senseless massacre.
As a trauma surgeon with a long career treating victims and survivors of gun violence, I’ve lived through nights like last night. I’ve tried to save lives destroyed by these weapons of war, and I’ve comforted family members devastated by the deaths of their loved ones. We need to reinstate the federal assault weapons ban. It’s time for Congress to act, and I’m ready to go to Washington and make sure it gets done.”
