Brady PAC and Their Future PAC Respond to Julie Johnson’s Distortions About Her Voting Record
Leading Gun Violence Prevention groups call out Texas State Rep. Julie Johnson for misleading comments about her own voting record.
WASHINGTON, DC – This afternoon, Brady PAC and Their Future PAC released the following statement about Julie Johnson’s comments in the Democratic primary for TX-32. Johnson, a State Representative who voted with Texas Republicans in support of six bills supported by the NRA and their allies, has yet to explain why she took those votes. Instead, she lashed out at her primary opponent, Dr. Brian Williams, for discussing her public voting record with voters.
“Julie Johnson continues to mislead voters about her pro-gun votes in the Texas legislature. She owes it to voters in TX-32 to explain why she chose to support six bills that made it harder for communities to keep their families safe. Instead, Johnson called her primary opponent a liar and falsely accused him of “MAGA-style” attacks for sharing the facts of her record with voters. The last thing we need in Congress is another Representative who will do the bidding of the NRA.” stated Dr. Annie Andrews, CEO of Their Future. Our Vote. and Their Future PAC.
“We should be celebrating that a Black survivor of gun violence – who helped write the first federal gun reform package in nearly three decades – is running for office. His record speaks for itself and he and his campaign continues to speak for families and survivors of gun violence. Dr. Williams is the candidate we can count on to always get it right when it comes to gun violence prevention and we need his voice in Congress.” stated Ashley Lantz, Executive Director of Brady PAC, the political arm of Brady.
Julie Johnson is obfuscating her record on guns, rather than owning up to the fact that she has time and time again sided with the gun lobby in the state legislature. But the votes speak for themselves: Johnson voted to give the Attorney General power to sue municipalities that try to keep their communities safe from gun violence using local ordinances (HB 3231); she voted to repeal restrictions on silencers (HB 2286); and she voted for a bill that effectively made gun and ammunition manufacturers and retailers essential businesses (HB 1500). She also voted with the gun lobby and against the majority of Democrats in support of HB 1791, HB 4346, and HB 1069.
